Jane Austen: Romantic or Ruthless?
Tickets available from the shop, Malvern Tourist Information or online here (incurs booking fee)
Jane Austen is commonly perceived as an author of cosy and romantic comedies of manners , written with elegance and wit. But there is also a deeper, moral aspect to Austen’s work: she was a ruthless observer of humankind, and through her characters exposed its foibles, weaknesses and sometimes even cruelty without bowing to position or class.
Looking at Austen’s work as a whole, but with particular reference to two of her lesser known novels, Northanger Abbey & Persuasion, Angela Day will be exploring with us some of these ways in which Jane Austen is an even more important writer than even many of her readers give her credit for.
